The BSC Board is pleased to announce that the City of Kansas City, MO., Parks and Recreation and Jackson County are collaborating to construct 5 new synthetic turf fields and a championship grass field at Swope Park. The City Council approved the measure Thursday, May 30, 2013. Construction will start this summer. The plan includes updated restrooms, concession stands and related amenities as well.
Brookside Soccer Club will serve as the anchor tenant for the facilities. The BSC Board met with Mayor James, City Manager Troy Schulte, Cindy Circo and Parks and Recreation Board Chair Jean Paul Chaurand and Commissioner Mark McHenry last Friday afternoon to discuss the project and to discuss BSC’s role at the redeveloped site. Sporting Kansas City/OnGoal is helping design and will construct the project. In addition SKC will manage the facility once developed. We have posted a conceptual drawing of the plans on the BSC website.
Mayor James provided assurance that BSC’s recreational and competitive soccer programming would be prioritized at the new facilities. He also confirmed that BSC would enjoy rental rates that would allow BSC to continue to provide affordable high-quality soccer programming in Kansas City’s urban core. The development contracts with SKC are being let in the next week or so. The Mayor indicated that BSC’s anchor tenant user agreement would be addressed shortly thereafter.
Construction could take up to 12 months, so BSC and Parks and Recreation are working on a plan to find alternate fields for some of our programs this fall and perhaps next spring. Good things await those with patience.
We will keep our BSC families apprised as the plans mature. We certainly want to thank Kansas City, Jackson County and Parks and Recreation for appreciating the need for these new fields and related amenities which will strengthen soccer in Kansas City immeasurably. Thanks also to our BSC families for supporting the effort with letters, e-mails and phone calls over the last year or so.
