Read This if You Want Referee

As you are all aware, it takes many dedicated people to run Brookside Soccer, so the over 1700 kids are able to enjoy the beautiful game of soccer in a positive environment.  Referees are a critical part of the Brookside Soccer Club “team” that makes sure that the games are Fun, Fair and Safe.  BSC is grateful for your efforts and contribution as a referee in previous seasons, and we hope that each and everyone is able to commit to refereeing again for this upcoming fall season.  Thanks in part from your help, the league continues to grow.  However with growth, comes a greater need to have good referees who are committed to the league and understand their important role in making sure that every player has a great soccer experience with the Brookside Soccer Club.  Just so everyone knows, the fall season for Brookside Soccer begins the weekend of September 12th, and we continue for 8 weeks concluding on the weekend of October 31st.  Similar to this past spring season, we anticipate having most of our games on Saturdays, but we also expect to have some games on Friday nights, and on Sundays.

To help us identify who is available and able to commit as a referee for this upcoming Brookside Soccer Club fall season, we need everyone to do the following:

If you intend to referee, then we need you to do the following:

  • Verify your contact information.  We communicate via email, so make sure that we have all of the email addresses needed to reach you and/or your parents.  Please make sure that we have both your home phone numbers and cell phone numbers as well.
  • Attend the referee re-certification training class. This class will occur on Saturday August 22nd, from 2pm to 4pm at the Bishop Mlege North Campus  Multipurpose Room.  This is a mandatory class, and you will not be able to referee if you do not attend this class.
  • Attend the pre-season coaches meeting.  This meeting will occur on Saturday August 29th, from 8:30 to 10:30 at the Southeast Community Center, which is located on 63rd Street, just west of the zoo entrance.  This is a mandatory meeting also where critical league information will be communicated.
  • Review your referee training books and information.  Remember as a referee, you never stop learning.  We expect every referee to know how to do their job.  If you don’t know how to do your job, then we cannot allow you to referee.
  • Find your referee uniform and equipment.  It is your job as a referee to come to the fields wearing your complete uniform and with all of your equipment.  In case you forgot, your uniform includes: yellow ref jersey, badge, black shorts, ref socks (yes we want everyone to wear the ref socks this season), and dark shoes (black is preferable).  Your equipment includes: whistle, red and yellow cards, game cards, coin, pen, flags, and a time piece.  If you not have a piece of your uniform or some of your equipment, then get it before the season starts.  Everyone should already have received your uniform and badge, if you didn’t receive something, let us know.  If you lost something, then we can order it, but we will charge you for that cost.  If you are missing any equipment, you can purchase them from Soccer Master or Dick’s.  We can also order them for you, however we will charge you for that cost as well.  If you do not have the correct equipment to referee, you will not be able to ref this season.
  • Determine your availability for the fall season.  This season, we are planning on pre-scheduling referee assignments so we are not chasing referees each week.  For this to occur, we need everyone’s schedule of availability for the fall season by the Coach’s meeting on August 29th.  This way we can schedule referee assignments several weeks out.  We understand that you may not know your complete schedule, but you should have a pretty good idea on when you will be available and when not available.  If conflicts arise during the season after the ref schedule is set, then we will address those conflicts when they arise.

Thank you in advance for your commitment to the Brookside Soccer Club, and your efforts to help us provide soccer to so many kids in our community.

Feel free to pass this along to your friends.

Both intermediate and beginning referee clinics will be offered. Contact Ric Sweeting at rsweeting@everestkc.net to RSVP and for questions.
