Referees
The fall soccer season is right around the corner, and before games we need our amazing group of referees prepared and readied for the season. Referees are a critical part of the Brookside Soccer Club “team” that makes sure that the games are Fun, Fair and Safe for the nearly 2000 kids who participate. Thanks in part from your help, the league continues to grow. However with growth, comes a greater need to have good referees who are committed to the league and understand their important role in making sure that every player has a great soccer experience with the Brookside Soccer Club. Just so everyone knows, the fall season for Brookside Soccer begins the weekend of September 11th, and we continue for 8 weeks concluding on the weekend of October 31st. We anticipate having most of our games on Saturdays, but we also expect to have some games on Friday nights, and on Sundays.
To help us identify who is available and able to commit as a referee for this upcoming Brookside Soccer Club fall season, we need everyone to do the following:

The Brookside Soccer Club needs dedicated individuals who are interested in becoming a referee. If you would like to be one of the many people who helps keep the games fair, fun and safe then:
- To be a BSC referee you must be at least 13 years old as of August 1st, 2010. You can also be an adult to referee, in fact we would welcome more grey hair on the referees.
- No experience is necessary, as we will train you. If you do have prior experience in other leagues, great! However we still would like you to attend the training class so you will understand what makes being a BSC referee so cool.
- All new referees will need to attend the training class that will be held on Saturday August 21st, from 8 A.M. to 3 P.M. at the Bishop Mlege North Campus Multipurpose Room. Lunch will be provided. At the end of this class, assuming that you pass the test, you will be ready to begin shadowing as a referee for Brookside Soccer.
- If you are interested, please contact Ric Sweeting rsweeting@everestkc.net to RSVP and for questions.

- Contact Ric Sweeting- Please do this ASAP to let him know that you are interested in continuing as a BSC referee or if you will not be returning to referee this season. rsweeting@everestkc.net
Attend the referee re-certification training class – This class will occur on Saturday August 21st, from 1 P.M. to 3 P.M. at the Bishop Mlege North Campus Multipurpose Room. This is a mandatory class, and you will not be able to referee if you do not attend this class. - Review your referee training books and information – Remember as a referee, you never stop learning. We expect every referee to know how to do their job. If you don’t know how to do your job, then we cannot allow you to referee.
- Find your referee uniform and equipment – It is your job as a referee to come to the fields wearing your complete uniform and with all of your equipment. In case you forgot, your uniform includes: yellow ref jersey, badge, black shorts, ref socks (yes we want everyone to wear the ref socks this season), and dark shoes (black is preferable). Your equipment includes: whistle, red and yellow cards, game cards, coin, pen, flags, and a time piece. If you not have a piece of your uniform or some of your equipment, then get it before the season starts. Everyone should already have received your uniform and badge, if you didn’t receive something, let us know. If you lost something, then we can order it, but we will charge you for that cost. If you are missing any equipment, you can purchase them from Soccer Master or Dick’s. We can also order them for you, however we will charge you for that cost as well. If you do not have the correct equipment to referee, you will not be able to ref this season
- Determine your availability for the fall season – This season, we are planning on pre-scheduling referee assignments so we are not chasing referees each week. For this to occur, we need everyone’s schedule of availability for the fall season by September 1st. This way we can schedule referee assignments several weeks out. We understand that you may not know your complete schedule, but you should have a pretty good idea on when you will be available and when not available. If conflicts arise during the season after the ref schedule is set, then we will address those conflicts when they arise.
Thank you in advance for your commitment to the Brookside Soccer Club, and your efforts to help us provide soccer to so many kids in our community.
Feel free to pass this along to your friends.
Both intermediate and beginning referee clinics will be offered. Contact Ric Sweeting at rsweeting@everestkc.net to RSVP and for questions.
