BSC, Kansas City Parks & Recreation, and Sporting KC Work Together to Improve Fields, Amenities, and Youth Programming at Swope Park Complex

August 20, 2012

Anyone who has attended a soccer game at Swope Park knows that the fields and facilities are not world class, but that is all about to change. Currently, we have reached our program capacity given the existing field arrangements.

After months (and years) of discussions, we are close to finally funding major improvements to the Swope Park facilities that will give the communities we serve a soccer experience that kids in other areas take for granted.

Why do the fields need improvements?

Without the improvements, the club will not be able to support additional participation and, therefore, limit our community outreach, which has grown considerably over the last few years.

  • The unevenness, poor grading, and lack of grass on these fields create poor playing conditions for youth soccer.  The targeted fields do not have any irrigation and, as a result, they have been impossible to maintain given the harsh Kansas City climate. Without this funding, it will be very difficult to reverse the pattern of progressive degradation and provide a safe environment conducive to youth soccer.
  • The increased use of the fields has created both traffic and parking challenges.  These challenges have created some uncontrolled conditions for the park users that need to be addressed.
  • The fields have extremely poor restroom facilities that are not only inadequate for the number of users, but they are in such poor shape that BSC has to pay for portable toilets for the park users.

Thanks to everyone who has helped identify this major shortcoming and given their time to making the improvements a reality. We will keep everyone informed as we know more details.
